It was my parents who first introduced me to Ansel Adams, we had a series of his work running across one wall for a time while I was growing up. A few weeks ago we were talking about the arrival of my recently acquired camera, a Halina AI TLR (twin lens reflex camera, made by Hong Kong company Haking) my dad was trying to explain something to do with lenses and he was brought up in conversation.

Adams (1902 — 1984) was born in San Francisco to aged parents with an affluent family history which lead to his early years being rather socially conservative. The family fortune was lost when he was about 5 years old, something that his mother would lament and hold over as his father worked tirelessly (albeit unsuccessfully) to restore the family to wealth. His father was a very significant influence in his life, supporting and encouraging him. Ansel was tutored at home and taught himself to play piano and read music at the age of 12.
