Fashion designer Gareth Pugh has returned to his roots in dance with the costume design for the Royal Opera House’s new ballet, Carbon Life. Scored by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt’s it is performed live on stage by a band led by Ronson on bass guitar, and accompanied by singers including Boy George, Hero Fisher, and Alison Mosshart (also a Vogue contributor) of The Kills.
Ballet pumps will take the form of moulded black spiked boots, while the dancer’s face will be covered with an angular pointed mask. Despite looking seemingly impossible to dance in, Pugh claims the costumes are completely unrestrictive.
